World Pharmacist Week-2018: A Report

Dept. of Supply & Stores, Ministry of Health & Prevention (MoHP), RAK Medical District, Ras Al Khaimah, in association with RAK College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (RAKCOPS), RAK Medical & Health Sciences University (RAKMHSU) organized World Pharmacist Week from 25th to 29th October 2018.

Both B. Pharm and MS students of RAKCOPS participated in the poster presentation and various health screening services on 25th & 26th October 2018, which was held at RAK Mall & Manar Mall, Ras Al Khaimah respectively.

During educative poster presentation sessions, students shared disease and management related information to the general public of Ras Al Khaimah on common ailments such as Asthma, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Vitamin-D deficiency, and Wound management. Students interacted with the general public and briefed them how Pharmacists along with other healthcare providers can help patients, in the better management of these common clinical conditions.

Students also took part as volunteers in performing health screening services such as monitoring of blood glucose, blood cholesterol, blood pressure, lung function tests, and skin test. They also had an opportunity to counsel and guide the individuals with abnormal results of these test to suitable management strategies. Students were also involved in counseling on smoking cessation in whom lung function tests were abnormal due to tobacco smoking.

RAKCOPS students had a great opportunity to implement their practice related knowledge and skills and demonstrate their role as Pharmacists in the healthcare team by involving themselves in this event. They also interacted with the members of MoHP and the general public of Ras Al Khaimah who helped them to understand the scope of their services as an integral part of the healthcare team in creating a healthy community.

RAKCOPS faculty were also invited to conduct workshop as a part of continuing pharmacy education series. Dr. Padma GM Rao, Dean was the chief guest of the event. Dr. Sathvik B. Sridhar, Chairperson-Incharge, Dept. of Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacology & Dr. Syed Arman Rabbani, Assistant Professor, conducted an interactive workshop on “Rational drug use”. Dr. Omar Sarheed & Dr. Areeg Anwer Ali, Associate Professors, spoke on “Generic and Biosimilar drugs” respectively. The workshop was attended by officials from MoHP, pharmacists, assistant pharmacists, students, faculty and representatives from pharmaceutical companies.

RAKCOPS thank Dr. Gurumadhva Rao, President-RAKMHSU, Dr. Fatema Mohamed Al Qatami, Head-Dept. of Supply & Stores, Central Medical Stores, MoHP, Dr. Najia Alvi, MoHP Coordinator- World Pharmacist Week-2018 and all the members from Dept. of supply & stores, Ministry of Health & Prevention (MoHP), student participants, faculty and staff of RAKCOPS & RAKMHSU who supported in successfully conducting the event to the public that has given prominence to RAKCOPS & RAKMHSU in general and to the profession of Pharmacy in particular.
