Internship - Medical University in UAE

Internship (MBBS)

After passing the final MBBS examination, every candidate will be required to undergo rotational Internship to the satisfaction of the University and Ministry of health (MOH) regulation for a period of twelve months so as to get internship completion certificate from MOH and the office of the Dean.

The intern shall be entrusted with clinical responsibilities under the direct supervision of a senior faculty/ consultant. They shall not be working independently.

Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire skills under supervision, so as to enable him/her to function independently.

Internship Objectives:

At the end of the internship training, the student shall be able to:

  • Diagnose clinically common disease conditions encountered in practice and make timely decision for referral to higher level;
  • Use discreetly the essential drugs, infusions, blood or its substitutes and laboratory services;
  • Manage all type of emergencies-medical, surgical obstetric, neonatal and pediatric, by rendering first level care;
  • Demonstrate skills in monitoring of the National Health Programs and schemes, oriented to provide preventive and promotive health care services to the community;
  • Develop leadership qualities to function effectively as a leader of the health team organized to deliver the health and family welfare service in the existing socio-economic, political and cultural environment;
  • Render services to chronically sick and disabled (both physical and mental) and to communicate effectively with the patient and the community.

Time allocation to each discipline is approximate and shall be guided more specifically by the actual experience obtained. Thus, a student serving in a district hospital emergency room may well accumulate skills in surgery, orthopedics, medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics during even a single night on duty. Responsible authorities from the MOH shall adjust the intern experience to maximize the intern’s opportunities to practice skills in patient care in rough approximation of the time allocation suggested.

Internship shall be completed by the students as per U.A.E. regulations.

Elective Clerkship Training

The electives provide the students with an opportunity to explore subjects of particular interest to them in greater depth than core course allows or to improve upon the areas of weakness by repeating a regular clerkship. This allows them additional time for personal growth as they fine tune their general medical skills and begin to explore the specialized areas that interest them or need improvement. Students are encouraged to select an elective course of their own choice for a period of four weeks during semester eight. The electives taken can be 'Home' electives or 'Away from home' electives. The Home electives are electives within the School of medicine, whereas Away from home electives can be an elective at another Medical School or a clinical facility.

The Away from home electives are available from many schools and a variety of clinical facilities. The Office of the Dean and faculty members in the department will guide the students regarding electives.

As with all other clerkships, failure to attend an approved elective will result in an unsatisfactory grade. The unsatisfactory grade can be made up in a Home clerkship.

International Electives: A one-month elective in a foreign country may be under taken for credit by a student, only if educational value of the electives can be verified. Requests for special consideration for international elective, should be discussed with the Student Counselor and addressed in writing to the Director, Clinical education / Dean, Medical College.

Assessment of Internship:

The intern shall maintain a record of work which is to be verified and certified by the medical officer/consultant under whom he/she works. Apart from scrutiny of the record of work, assessment and evaluation of training shall be undertaken by an objective approach using situation tests in knowledge, skills and attitude, during and at the end of training. Based on the record of work and date of evaluation, the Ministry of Health shall issue a certificate of satisfactory completion of training.
