About Us

Welcome to RAK Medical and Health Sciences University

RAKMHSU is the First Comprehensive Health Science University under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, who is also the Chancellor of the University.

With the continued unstinted support from His Highness, RAKMHSU is marching forward as per its Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives. Now, RAKMHSU is fully owned and managed by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah. Further, all the programs have been fully accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation under the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research.

From the humble beginning with 22 students, RAKMHSU has grown remarkably well, having 967 students from 41 different Nationalities. Same way, RAKMHSU is proud of having 101 Teaching Faculty, 77 Adjunct Faculty and 71 Non-teaching Staff hailing from 20 different countries. Actually, RAKMHSU has become a role model of synergy and cooperation among the students and faculty of different nationalities and religions pursuing with commitment their respective professional careers. The continued significant contribution from the committed faculty has helped RAKMHSU immensely in improving the academic standards. RAKMHSU is proud to maintain a Student-Teacher Ratio at 5:1, which is more than an ideal situation.

One of the happiest moments for RAKMHSU was the First Convocation, which saw 19 Medical and 48 Nursing students getting their degrees from the hands of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi. On September 30, 2013, RAKMHSU had the privilege of having its 3rd Convocation, in which a total of 125 students (39 from Medical; 07 from Dental; 20 from Pharmacy; Nursing: 07 from BSN; 40 from RN-BSN Bridge; 12 from MSN) have received their Degree Certificates from His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and Supreme Council Member, United Arab Emirates, who is also the Chancellor of the University.

It is also a matter of pride for RAKMHSU for being able to be the First in UAE to start 2 year Masters Programs in Nursing and Pharmacy. Now, in addition to the MS in Adult Health Nursing (MSN), MS in Clinical Pharmacy, we also have MS in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, MS in Pharmaceutics and Pharm.D programs after due accreditation. It is also heartening to see our Nursing and Pharmacy graduates getting placements in different hospitals and industries immediately after their graduation. It is also satisfying to note that our students have not only done well in some of the external qualifying examinations, but also have done well in both Dubai Health Care and Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD) Examinations.

The year 2013-14 saw RAKMHSU continuing with several steps taken to improve teaching-learning including clinical teaching. It is noteworthy to mention here that more than 35% of our students are recipients of merit scholarships from either Sheikh Saqr foundation for Excellence or through other Government & NGO organizations. Further, this year saw several students not only participating in different conferences both within RAKMHSU and outside but also receiving several awards including Sports awards.

Looking at the progress made in the last 8 years, in 2013-14, RAKMHSU continued to focus on the Student satisfaction level.

It is very gratifying to see that the ratings based on the IRO feedback has seen a consistent improvement from as low as 2.50 out of 5 - to – 4.51 out of 5, in the different services like Academic Advising, Admissions, Examinations, Student Services, Finance & HR, IT facilities, Library and other services. Nothing can be more satisfying to the University when we know that our students, who are the end users, not only understand the facilities available but also utilize them properly. In this connection, I really appreciate the efforts of the Institutional Research Office (IRO), who is working very hard to collect and analyze the data very systematically and all other offices of the University and the four Constituent Colleges.

Thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between University and the Ministry of Health (MOH), our students get hands on clinical experience in both Sheikh Saqr and Obaidulla Hospitals in Ras Al Khaimah, and in Fujairah hospital. Commissioning of the Geriatric hospital with 140 beds has added to the comprehensiveness of the clinical teaching. Further, the Clinical teaching for medical students has been strengthened by the addition of 10 Core Clinical Faculty. Further, Memorandum of Understandings, both National and International, with Ministry of Health, UAE (Clinical Training), Ministry of Health, UAE (Sponsorship of UAE Nationals for Nursing Program), Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Tawam Hospital, Al-Ain, UAE, Julphar Pharmaceuticals, UAE, Dabur International Ltd (DIL), Ras Al Khaimah, UAE Genetic Diseases Association, UAE, Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, The Hashemite University, Jordan, University of Findlay, USA, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans School of Nursing, USA, International American University College of Medicine, Vieux For, St. Lucia, US, Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences, Malaysia, Charles University, Prague, University of Basrah, Iraq, Ceylon Medical College Council Approval, Sri Lanka, Catholic University of Muricia, Dr. MGR Educational & Research Institute, India, Rajarajeswari Medical College & Hospital, India, have expanded the facilities for Electives and Clinical Training in other areas as well.

RAKMHSU is fortunate to have matching physical and infrastructure facilities such as classrooms, multipurpose laboratories and a Clinical Skills Laboratory which are critical for the faculty to achieve the goals and objectives of each and every course of different programs. The University recognizes the highly commendable work done by the office of the Finance & Administration, and facility management in creating these facilities in a record time. Now, plans are being made to construct additional buildings to meet the requirements of both Nursing and Pharmacy Colleges. Now, the RAK College of Dental Sciences had moved to a brand new building with all the state of the art facilities including the latest dental chairs and other equipment.

Our library has grown into one of the best libraries in UAE with more than 18,800 text books and 9005 Online Journals (PROQUEST and CINAHL) in addition to Computer, Internet and Wi-Fi facilities. Students and Faculty including Adjunct Clinical Faculty have access to these facilities from outside the campus too and through two satellite Libraries. Micromedex, which is a database of drugs, specially serves the Clinical Pharmacy department and its Masters students.

The Center for Education Development and Research (CEDAR) continued its efforts in organizing several important workshops with the main purpose of helping the faculty to acquire the necessary skills of teaching, learning and assessment.

The Office of Examinations continued to improve upon the process of examination and its organization. Several books on MCQs were procured in each and every course to help the faculty to come out with better quality questions. In addition, several processes of examinations have been streamlined. The Vetting Committees for both MCQs and PBLs are making earnest attempt to improve the Quality of both in addition to their uniform implementation across all colleges. I congratulate the Office for conducting examinations for more than 130 courses each semester across four constituent colleges in a very systematic way. We congratulate all our students for their meticulous hard work as shown by an overall pass percentage of over 95% with more than 26% obtaining excellent or outstanding grades. Starting from the year 2010, the University has instituted a system of academic honors for students with excellent academic achievements.

In addition to the celebration of UAE National Day, RAKMHSU Cultural Day and the Student Conference “Genetic Diseases in the UAE” were some of the highlights of student activities of the year. It is very gratifying to note the high level of participation by students in both Oral and Poster Presentations at the Conference. In addition, students participated in several sports activities within and outside RAKMSU. The Office of the Student Affairs is to be commended for initiating all the activities and managing a high level of student involvement.

In addition to their academic achievements, our students excelled in extracurricular activities too. We are proud of our students who received awards for their presentations in the Dubai International Pharmaceutical and Technologies Conference and Exhibition (DUPHAT-2013) and 9th BITS Pilani Sports Festival.

RAKMHSU was quite fortunate to be the host for several dignitaries who visited RAKMHSU on several occasions. To mention a few, Dr. Lauren Arnold, Advisor to Health Minister, UAE; Dr. Fathima al Rifai, Secretary, NMC, UAE; Mr. Richard Mottershead, Senior Lecturer, Glyndon University; Dr. Mohammed Shein, President, Zanzibar (Tanzania); Dr. Mariam Matar, Chairman, UAE Genetic Diseases Association; Dr. Satish Chandra, Research Director & Head, Clinical Research, Tawam Hospital, Al-Ain; Dr. Udupa, Principal, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal, India; Dr. Jey Pillai, clinical Pharmacist, St. Rose Hospital, Siena Campus, US.

RAKMHSU also conducted several CME programs with the help of faculty. Large number of delegates attended the CMEs and it was a nice feeling for us to receive accolades from everybody for the facilities and the way CMEs were organized. The CME Program “Management of Pain – A Multidisciplinary Approach” which was conducted in association with the Ministry of Health, and Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG), Ras Al Khaimah, was an outstanding success. Similarly, the CME Programs on “Cardiology Update” which hosted more than 600 delegates, “World Hypertension Day” 2nd RAKCON Scientific Nursing Conference “Making a Difference: Strengthening Nursing Education, Practice and Research for Quality Patient Care”, were the other CMEs organized by RAKMHSU.

We are aware that the reputation and fame of the University, does not depend upon the bricks or physical facilities alone, but on the quality of faculty and the performance of the students. It is gratifying to note that our students are coping up very well with their demanding schedules. In addition, they also participate in co-curricular activities bringing laurels to the University. Faculty are, no doubt playing their role effectively as friends, philosophers and guides to the student body.

Our faculties have made a beginning by attending more Conferences, both National and International in addition to publishing around 83 research articles in reputed journals and 66 research projects.

We are grateful to His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, for his continuous guidance and support. His Highness has been kind enough to award more than forty full scholarships to the meritorious students through Sheikh Saqr Program for Government Excellence (SSPGE). Further, the University also granted merit scholarships based on the grades in the respective semesters.

I convey my deep sense of appreciation to the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and Ministry of Health (MOH), for their guidance and prompt action and timely help.

All the Deans in the University including the College Deans have been a constant source of strength from the beginning. I am extremely thankful to them.

We do appreciate the efforts of all the University Officials, faculty and students for keeping the flag of RAKMHSU flying high.

We earnestly hope that with the cooperation of the Government and people of Ras Al Khaimah, and guidance from CAA and MOH, RAKMHSU will march forward successfully to achieve its goals and create a niche in Health Education and Healthcare.
